A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of X-ray to measure bone mineral density — the standard test for assessing osteoporosis and fracture risk. The same technology also measures body composition, mapping fat mass, muscle mass and how they're distributed across your body.
What to expect
- You lie fully clothed on an open table while a scanning arm passes over you — there's no enclosed tunnel.
- Bone density scans focus on the hip and lower spine and take about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Body composition scans map fat and lean muscle across the whole body.
- Results are reported to your referring doctor.
How to prepare
- Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before a bone density scan.
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal buttons, zips or buckles.
- Let us know if you've had a recent CT or nuclear medicine scan using contrast.
Bone density (DEXA) scans are bulk billed where you're eligible. Body composition scans are a flat $75.
