Preparation

What to do before your scan.

Most scans need very little preparation — but a small amount of planning makes the day run smoothly. Find your modality below.

Ultrasound probe being prepared with conducting gel before a scan
  • CT scan (with IV contrast)

    • Fast for 4 hours before the scan — water is fine.
    • Continue your regular medication unless your doctor says otherwise.
    • Wear comfortable clothes without metal zips or studs in the area being scanned.
    • Mention any history of kidney disease, diabetes or contrast allergy when you book.
  • CT scan (without contrast)

    • No fasting required.
    • Bring your referral, Medicare card, and any prior imaging.
    • Wear something comfortable with no metal in the scan area.
  • CT Calcium Score

    • No fasting required.
    • Avoid caffeine and intense exercise for 24 hours before the scan — it raises your heart rate.
    • Wear a metal-free top across the chest area.
  • Abdominal ultrasound

    • Fast for 6 hours — no food, no water.
    • Don't smoke in the 6 hours before the scan.
    • If you MUST take medications please take them with as little water as possible.
  • Pelvic ultrasound

    • Drink 1L of water in the hour before your appointment.
    • Don't empty your bladder — a full bladder gives the clearest images.
  • Pregnancy ultrasound

    • For dating scans (under 13 weeks): arrive with a moderately full bladder.
    • For mid-pregnancy and growth scans: no special preparation.
    • You can bring one extra person in the room, and an interpreter as well.
  • X-ray

    • All X-rays are walk-in during clinic hours.
    • Bring your referral and Medicare card.
    • Wear clothing free of metal in the area being imaged where possible.
    • Let us know if there's any chance you could be pregnant.
  • Dental imaging (OPG, Lateral Ceph)

    • Remove glasses, earrings, hairpins and necklaces before the scan.
    • Bring your referral (a photo on your phone is fine).
    • The scan itself takes 15–30 seconds depending on the study.
  • Image-guided injections

    • Continue your normal medication unless we or your doctor has advised otherwise.
    • Bring any prior imaging or reports your doctor referenced in the referral.
    • Arrange for a driver if possible.
    • Allow up to 45 minutes at the clinic.
  • 3D / 4D baby scan

    • We only scan from 26–32 weeks.
    • Drink plenty of water the day before so you're well hydrated.
    • A small snack about an hour beforehand makes most babies more active.
