Computed Tomography (CT) gives your doctor a detailed cross-sectional view of a part of your body — from bone and joint detail through to chest, abdomen and vascular structures. Our new Canon scanner uses the lowest clinically appropriate dose for each study, with shorter scan times than older machines.

What to expect

  • Reception will check your referral and any allergies before you scan.
  • A radiographer positions you on the scan table — most studies take under 10 minutes.
  • If contrast is required, a small cannula goes in your forearm. Most patients describe a brief warm flush during injection.
  • Reports go to your GP or specialist within 48 hours on average; urgent studies are prioritised on the day.

How to prepare

  • Bring your referral, Medicare card and any prior imaging.
  • If the scan needs IV contrast, fast for 4 hours beforehand (water is fine).
  • Continue your regular medication unless your doctor says otherwise.
  • Mention any history of kidney disease, diabetes or contrast allergy when you book.
  • Wear comfortable clothes free of metal zips or studs in the area being scanned.
